Dog caffeine

The amount of caffeine that is considered dangerous for dogs varies based on the dog's size and individual sensitivity, but as a general guideline, moderate to high levels of caffeine can be hazardous. Toxic effects can be seen with as little as 9 milligrams of caffeine per pound of body weight. For example, a dose of about 150 milligrams (equivalent to one to two cups of brewed coffee) can be toxic to a 20-pound dog.

It's important to note that different products contain varying concentrations of caffeine. For instance, brewed coffee has more caffeine per ounce than chocolate, but less than espresso or energy drinks. Even small amounts of highly concentrated sources, like diet pills or certain medications, can be extremely dangerous. If you suspect your dog has ingested caffeine, it's crucial to seek veterinary care immediately. Symptoms of caffeine poisoning in dogs include hyperactivity, restlessness, vomiting, elevated heart rate, high blood pressure, and in severe cases, seizures or death.
